People with diabetes are at a greater risk for a number of oral health issues that can compromise the state of their teeth and mouths. It’s not uncommon for individuals with diabetes to experience the following problems with their oral health:
- Periodontal gum disease – this is the number one issue experienced by people with diabetes and it damages the gum and bone that hold your teeth. This can result in pain when eating, as well as more difficulty controlling blood sugar
- Dry mouth – dry mouth can result in thrush which is an infection
- Increased glucose in saliva – with diabetes, glucose can increase in the saliva
- Tooth loss – in order to help prevent tooth decay individuals with diabetes need to focus on proper oral health techniques
Those with diabetes don’t need to take any additional steps to ensure their oral health isn’t affected; but they do need to make an effort to brush and floss, visit a dentist regularly and keep blood glucose levels under control.
